Upcoming actions: October-December 2018
Leaders from across our Chapter have been working hard to plan an exciting range of actions to build our power around our priority issues. Click here to learn more about what's coming next and be sure to make a note of these dates and times in your diaries!
Reclaim the Metro – 13th October
As many of you will already know our Reclaim the Metro action is taking place on Saturday 13th of October, the first day of Hate Crime Awareness Week. The plan is to meet at Monument Station at 12pm and together board the Metro all the way to Whitley Bay to have fish and chips. Ladies, you are invited to wear a headscarf to show solidarity if you would like to.
This action stemmed from last year’s listening campaign. Throughout 2017 we heard too many stories about the increase in verbal and physical acts of violence against Muslim women in particular. Especially on public transport across our region. Our action will raise awareness about the all too common hate crimes that predominantly visibly Muslim women are subjected to when using public transport.
Our ask is for all local public transport companies to implement their new, improved hate crime policies as a matter of urgency. Find more details on this flyer and contact email@example.com for more information or to confirm your attendance.
Living Wage Week event - week of 5th November
Details to be confirmed and added here soon.
Mental Health Assembly – 22nd November
On Thursday 22 nd November we will come together at the Civic Centre in Newcastle to launch our report on mental health. As well as outlining our upcoming actions and campaigns in the region, we will launch our report on Mental Health which our Commission has been working on alongside Newcastle University
At the assembly we will recap our asks, which are: for there to be two GPs available to university students (one at home and one in their respective university town), counsellors specialised in mental health in all schools, for the opening hours of the pharmacy at the Royal Victoria Infirmary to be extended and new posters to be put up in A&Es explaining that A&E departments are there to deal with both physical and mental health emergencies. Contact Andrew, Helena or Joe for more information.
Awards and Celebration Evening - 6th December
More information coming soon, but save the date as this will be one of our biggest events - an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate our achievements over the past year, and agree on our strategy to become even more powerful in 2019.
