General Election announcement: “Our diverse community membership is ready for this moment”.

With the announcement of the General Election set to take place on 4th July, Matthew Bolton, Citizens UK Executive Director said:

“Citizens UK welcomes the General Election as an opportunity for everyday people to make their voices heard. Against a backdrop of growing inequalities, this marks a pivotal moment for communities to play an active part in shaping the future of our country.

Our diverse community membership is ready for this moment. Over the last few months, teams of local community leaders have been tirelessly registering their friends and neighbours to vote and meeting politicians of all Parties, sharing their experiences and securing support for our campaigns.

Today, we are launching a powerful Citizens Manifesto that calls for the next UK Government to work with us in areas such as housing, mental health, the real Living Wage, and improving the pathway to British citizenship. Now the election is called, teams of local leaders up and down the country will be taking action to make this Citizens Manifesto a reality.

We know that together we can create a better, fairer society. Let’s use our democratic power to make that happen.”

Over the last two years, thousands of people in communities across our membership have agreed on the most pressing issues to campaign on - such as paying workers a real Living Wage, preventing housing and homelessness, improving the pathway to British citizenship and more.
