Why do student unions join?

Citizens UK is the UK’s largest, most diverse alliance of civil society organisations, including a growing network of Students’ Unions using community organising to change their institutions and communities.

Being a member isn’t just a badge — it’s a commitment to build power, support your leaders, and shape the future of your community alongside a wider civil society alliance. Here’s what you can expect:

Civic Power & Representation

A seat at the table in a local civil society alliance — shaping campaigns on shared priorities like housing, work, transport, climate, and more – alongside schools, places of worship, community groups, unions and other local charities. Through a regular habit of public action, these alliances are regularly around the table with decision makers and winning lasting change.

Strategic Support

Dedicated Organiser time to support your SU via coaching, facilitation, campaign development. Embed organising practice and skills across your organisation and teams.

Training & Development

Attend local training to sharpen your understanding of Community Organising, alongside local peers. Members can also access spaces on our nationally accredited Community Organising training, learning alongside civil society leaders from across the country. You will also gain access to a national network of SUs also thinking deeply about Community Organising.

Campaign Impact

Help recruiting and developing student leaders to run powerful campaigns rooted in listening and shared interests. Be part of actions that win — from Living Wage to mental health reform to safe streets and housing.

Not based in a Citizens UK alliance area?

No problem. We work with Students’ Unions across the UK — even in places where we don’t yet have a formal alliance.
