Criminalisation of asylum seekers in the UK

Colchester Citizens was pleased to work with the Human Rights Centre Clinic department of strategic partner University of Essex on research into the criminalisation of asylum seekers in the UK.

Authors Ameena Abdo, Emma Appleby, Achsa Mary Jose John & Léonie Ngom recommended that safe routes be increased, the backlog of asylum claims is cleared, and that those seeking sanctuary are provided with an adequate standard of living.

These endorse Citizens UK General Election Manifesto priorities to:

  1. Make acquisition of citizenship for people who have made the UK their home a guiding principle of the migration system.
  2. Ensure children and families do not face destitution while on the pathway to citizenship.
  3. Create a fit-for-purpose application system for settlement and citizenship.

The report is available here.
