Southwark cabinet member for adult care and Parliamentary Candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood backs the Social Care campaign

Students from James Allen's Girls' School, as members of national Community Organising charity Citizens UK, are fighting for a better standard of care for Southwark elderly residents. Girls from the school were joined by members of Southwark Citizens (local branch of Citizens UK) for the launch of the "I care about care" campaign in the borough at HC-One’s Camberwell Green Care Home.

The campaign drawn up by Citizens UK recommends a Living Wage for carers; support for carers to get more training; and encourages civil society to adopt care homes in their community to offer friendship and support to residents. Dulwich and West Noorwod parliamentary candidate Halen Hayes and Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle cabinet member for adult care for the borough of Southwark support for the campaign.

Maureen Tomlin from the local Baptist Church knows first hand how poor care can impact family members. Her husband admitted to a care home and because of bad treatments he had to change homes 5 times within a year. Maureen says: “Care is fundamentally important to our society. We have an ageing population and a creaking system. Central government will have to invest further in the care profession if we are to ensure our elderly are given the support and care they deserve. It was great to be at Camberwell Green HC-One Care Home to see what good care can do for the elderly of our community. I’m glad they have taken the step to support our campaign for better care across the board.“

Percival Chari, HC-One Project Manager for the South of England, said: "HC-One aims to provide the kindest care, and taking part in memorable events such as this one is an important part of that. It was lovely to welcome Citizens UK in to our home on this important day for the industry and we look forward to welcoming them back in the future.”
