Empoderando Padres; a powerful parent group!

Written by Ana Ramirez Mourraille

This winter, I had the good fortune of accompanying a group of Latin American parents living in London for the creation of the Empoderando Padres group.

The project comes from a King’s College London initiative with Citizens UK; it is an active network of mothers and fathers striving for a greater understanding of the English education system, so they can to better support and guide their children in their education.

This group results after Liliana, an active participant of Parent Power (PP), came up with the great and generous idea of sharing this space with Latin American parents. The project comes from a King’s College London initiative with Citizens UK; it is an active network of mothers and fathers striving for a greater understanding of the English education system, so they can to better support and guide their children in their education.

Studies have shown that during adolescence, active and proper support of parents is essential in reducing the "performance gap" among the different children who attend school. The "performance gap" can almost define who goes to college (and whose left out). The PP group was created with the idea that parents have a decisive role and a definitive impact on supporting and guiding their children during high school. From studying and learning together, promoting discipline, study habits and the compliance of school work, to providing the logistic, bureaucratic and operational support required by the complex English educational model, while emotionally supporting and encouraging their adolescent child.

The PP group is an admirable initiative. Some of their many victories are: obtaining scholarships of more than 90% for their children to attend summer training and university preparation camps, and, in the framework of the election of the new mayor for London, demanding the candidates the selection of a "parents’ commissioner". A person in charge of advising and conveying the “parents approach” in the interventions, services and public policies of the mayor's office.

Empoderando Padres is a group exclusively in Spanish. 1/3 of Latin Americans in the UK do not speak English and therefore face enormous challenges, of all kinds, in their processes of inclusion and integration on the recipient city. PP is built from the premise that parents have a crucial role and a significant impact during the teenage years of their children and that their support, among many other variables, can almost guarantee their entrance to college. That is why it is important to strengthen this link. Among Latin Americans parents, and in general in migrant families, there is a very important cultural gap that we hope to work and overcome together.

Finally, this group is an active and restless network of parents supporting each other. Managing to deeply connect. Understanding each other without judging. A safe space for individual but also collective growth. A dynamic and warm WhatsApp group. A community that is organising.

Because, and this was taught to me by my dad who has dedicated his whole life to this subject, education creates value in three ways. It makes you more valuable for the labor market (economic value), helps you cultivate and strengthen your principles (moral value) and makes you confident and courageous (courage value). Hopefully, Empoderando Padres will create value in these three senses.

So we start this year eager (and excited!) to consolidate an active group of parents who want to teach and learn, interested in moving forward collectively and reaching goals that benefit us all, but especially their children.
