Rabbis, pastors and imams unite to call for Lambeth council to offer sanctuary to 50 UN refugees

Lambeth faith leaders, Rabbi Janet Darley, Pastor Suzette Ashley and Imam Abdulkadir Mohammed, with the support of their congregations and local communities, joined together at Windrush Square, on 9th October during the Jewish festival of Sukkot, to call upon Lambeth Council to offer resettlement to a small number of vulnerable refugees living in UN camps near war-zones such as Syria and Iraq.

Rabbis, Bishops and Imams unite to call for Redbridge Council to offer sanctuary to 50 UN refugees

On Wednesday 8th October, at the start of the Jewish Festival of Succot at Bet Tikvah Synagogue in Ilford, senior faith leaders Rabbi Danny Rich, Chief Executive of Liberal Judaism, Imam Mohamed Fahim (South Woodford Mosque), Father Brian McGrath (Saint Thomas of Canterbury), Rabbi David Hulbert (Bet Tikvah Synagogue, Ilford) and Iris Radulin, a refugee leader from Albanian community organization  Shpresa (‘Hope’ in English), joined members of national community organising charity, Citizens UK, to call upon the Leader of Redbridge Council, Jas Athwal,  to resettle a small number of vulnerable refugees living in UN camps near war-zones such as Syria and Iraq. Currently the UK has resettled fewer than 20 refugee families from Syria since the start of the crisis.

St Clement's Takes Top Prize at Housing Awards

The East London Community Land Trust’s innovative housing development at St Clement’s, Mile End, has won two prestigious industry awards. The development at the St Clement’s Hospital site is home to London’s, and the UK’s first urban, community land trust scheme. On Thursday 11 September the project won the overall award for ‘Provider of the Year’ as well as the ‘Best Scheme in Planning’ award at the National Housing Awards.

Rebdridge Citizens thank leader and deputy leader of the council and chair of the Ilford BID for banning high strength, low cost alcohol in Ilford town centre

On Wednesday 10th September, Redbridge Citizens, a local branch of national community organising charity, CitizensUK, met the Leader of Redbridge Council, Jas Athwal, Deputy Leader, Wes Streeting and Chair of the Ilford BID, Rai Holdstock, to publicly thank them for working to ban the sale of low cost, high strength alcohol in Ilford town centre.

Engineering a lasting legacy in East London

Today the Social Mobility Commission reports that the UK is "deeply elitist" and calls for a national effort to "break open" Britain's elite, asking the government to tackle the culture of unpaid internships that disadvantage those too poor to work for nothing. Citizens UK believes that offering work placements to all is just one way to tackle inequality of opportunity.

On Saturday 25th July the Liberal Jewish Synagogue played host to the New Citizens Organising Team as they launched their plan to resettle 1500 Syrian refugees in the UK.

An open letter to Arsene Wenger

Tomorrow, a team from Islington Citizens is heading to the Emirates Stadium to wish Arsenal good luck for their first game of the season and to remind them of the pressing need to champion the Living Wage by becoming the first Living Wage Football Club. Martin Wroe, a member of North London Citizens, has written this wonderful open letter to Arsene Wenger, manager of Arsenal, asking for his support for the Living Wage.

Citizens UK sets out its manifesto ahead of the 2015 general election

Today, Thursday 24th July, Citizens UK is launching its People’s Manifesto in the build up to the 2015 general election at a Civil Society Summit, hosted by Queen Mary University of London and attended by Rt Hon Sam Gyimah MP for East Surrey and Children's Minister.

Lambeth Citizens launch financial resilience strategy with Lambeth Council

On Monday 14th July, Lambeth Citizens and Lambeth Council joined forces to launch their Financial Resilience Strategy for the borough.

At a launch event in Lambeth Town Hall, Lambeth Citizens leaders spoke about their campaign to tackle the spread of pay day loan shops and civil society's role in reducing poverty.

There were also speeches from Cllr Paul McGlone, Deputy Leader of Lambeth Council and Lucky Chandrasekera, Chief Executive of London Mutual Credit Union.

Another step forward on the long, long road to fair credit

David Barclay, Faith in Public Life Officer at the Contextual Theology Centre, and organiser on the Citizens UK Just Money campaign writes:

This is the day that many thought would never come. It is now almost five years since a group of churches, mosques and synagogues in the civil society alliance Citizens UK began to call for a re-introduction of anti-usury laws to stop people being exploited by excessive interest rates. Today, finally, plans have been announced for a total cost of credit cap.
