On June 16, 2020 the government announced that they will provide about 1.3 million school children with school meal vouchers. This is off the back of a significant amount of work from the part of Citizens UK and our incredible leaders up and down the country, as well as a very high profile letter from Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford.
Sheila Bamber, a Citizens UK leader from Tyne & Wear, said: "The government’s decision to support families with free school meals over the summer is much welcomed. We are really thankful to Marcus Rashford for helping to shine a light on this cause. However we still need to see how families with no recourse to public funds fit into this. While this is a great step, we have to remember that hunger doesn’t end after this summer. It is every holiday, every year. We need a long term fix to ensure that no child is left hungry – and schools are ready to work with the government to alleviate child poverty all year round."
