Leeds Muslim Youth Group Leader Turns Testimony into Film
Zainab al-Hariri, a leader with Leeds Muslim Youth Group, one of our member communities, has played an important role in our work to welcome refugees to Leeds. She has organised her community to donate clothes and household items to Syrian families who have moved to West Yorkshire. Members of Leeds Muslim Youth Group also represented Leeds Citizens at the National Refugees Welcome Conference in Birmingham.
Last year, Zainab arranged a day long Refugee Welcome event for Syrian Refugees at her mosque, providing food, games and children's entertainment for the families. The refugee families appreciated the welcome and enjoyed the opportunity to build relationships and speak with other Arabic speakers who attend the mosque. Zainab identifies with many of the testimonies of families who have fled war and injustice in Syria, having experienced oppression under Sadaam Hussein's regime in Iraq.
She has been inspired to make a feature film based on her experiences of injustice and bereavement in Iraq prior to moving to the UK. The film is called the House of Silence and you can support it through Crowdfunding here: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/zainab-al-hariri?utm_id=66&utm_term=kV4zQP6VW
