From Monday 21st September 2020, thousands of people in the UK will be at risk of losing their homes as the ban on evictions policy ends. This is leaving many of our neighbours in an overwhelmingly vulnerable position as coronavirus cases rise throughout the country.
People with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) will be especially impacted, as they are not entitled to support packages offered by the Government.
Now, more than ever, we need to continue supporting all our communities so people aren't forced onto the streets, regardless of their status.
Many of our leaders across the UK have been working tirelessly during the pandemic to ensure that temporary accommodation is provided to those who are street homeless or have lost their homes.
Father Dominic Robinson, a West London Citizens UK leader and Parish Priest from the Diocese of Westminster, said:
“While many people were housed at this time of great public health risk, many were not. We saw more and more new people on the streets who had lost their jobs and homes. With the end of the ban on evictions for renters, the number of people who are homeless and living on the streets will just get worse and worse.
Everybody wants to end rough sleeping forever. The united effort over the summer has shown we can work well together and find solutions. Now, we need to make those solutions permanent."
We are calling on the Government to develop longer term solutions and support for all people who call the UK home.
We want reassurance that local authorities will get the funding and support they need to keep everyone safe at this critical time.
