About Citizens UK
Citizens UK is the national home of Community Organising. We are a registered charity (no. 1107264) that exists to build the capacity of ordinary people to participate in public life, take action for the common good and strengthen civil society institutions.
We do this by:
- Training thousands of people in the craft of Community Organising and developing their capacity to act as leaders in their community, neighbourhood or city.
- Supporting faith, education and community organisations to build strong local relationships and increase the participation of their members in the wider community.
- Building powerful alliances of civil society institutions who work together for the common good, hold local decision-makers to account and run non-partisan campaigns for social justice.
About the training
This training is aimed at Bradford Youth Service staff who want to develop the key skills of broad-based community organising and apply them to their work with young people in the district. Through bringing community organising methods into youth work, staff will be able to increase young people's sense of their own power and develop a useful framework for seeking positive change in their neighbourhoods.
The course content will include the principles of community organising, storytelling, relationship building and practical tools for how the young people you work with can tell the story of youth work through action.
Sessions will include a mix of presentation, discussion, practical exercises and reflection.
We will also include opportunities for staff to learn about and get involved in the Bradford Opportunity Area's Youth Constituency Panels.
Testimonies from Citizens UK members around the UK who have done this training
“Coulsdon College has benefitted greatly. The opportunities made available to our young people have had a huge impact on their social, personal and professional development. A number of students have developed into young leaders and I have thoroughly enjoyed taking action to make change in our communities.” Thirza Legg, Coulsdon Sixth Form College, London
“As a youth worker in a mainly black and minority ethnic area with a sizeable Somali community, I see a lot of social issues first hand. By joining Cardiff Citizens, we’ve finally found a channel to address them. We’ve worked together with a wide range of groups to win victories on low pay, good jobs – not to mention halal chicken! Thanks to Cardiff Citizens we’ve got a way to make real change for social justice.” Ali Abdi, Somali Progressive Association, Cardiff
