The Covid-19 crisis has shone a spotlight on the issue of low pay and the injustice many people face on work and wages in this country. People have suddenly found that delivery drivers, the supermarket assistant and the hospital cleaner are foundational to their lives and wider society, as they take great personal risks to keep the economy going.
We think the UK needs to rethink who we value and how. Some of the workers we have left to languish in low-paid and insecure jobs are the very ones we cannot live without. It's time to make amends.
We think these fantastic key workers keeping our country running, like carers, supermarket workers, couriers, and hospital cleaners deserve better. They should be paid a real Living Wage.
Big employers - particularly those who stand to benefit, can do their bit by accrediting with the Living Wage Foundation and ensuring all workers get the real Living Wage of £9.30 an hour UK wide and £10.75 in London.
We hope this crisis will bring out the best in Britain in solidarity, cooperation and care for our communities. We encourage all to share our values of fairness, dignity and a wage fit to live on to sign up here and join the campaign as it develops further out of this crisis.
