As winter sets in, a new crisis is facing Syrian refugees in UN camps. After snowstorms and freezing temperatures, UNICEF has said that the camps have become 'deadly for children'. Similar conditions are faced by millions of refugees in Iraq.
The UN has called for Western countries to do more and resettle 130,000 of the most vulnerable refugees, many of them children.
Whilst Germany has pledged to take 30,000 refugees, and Canada 13,000, the UK has taken just 90.
In response to this crisis, Citizens UK is calling on local authorities to agree to resettle 50 Syrian refugees. If 50 local authorities agreed to welcome just 50 refugees the UK could resettle 2,500 refugees from Iraq and Syria.
You can make this happen by doing three things:
- Ask you local council to welcome 50 refugees into your area
- Offer to befriend refugees and find suitable accommodation for them
- Lobby your MP to increase the UK's resettlement quota to 2,500
