Lewisham Citizens sell Community Land Trust Shares

Lewisham Citizens celebrate selling 500 community land trust shares.  Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said 'I would love to buy a share myself but I think there would be too many conflicts of interest'. The Mayor agreed to continue to use all of his powers to push through a Lewisham Citizens Community Land Trust project and ensure that the group receive a letter of intent regarding a piece of land in Lewisham just before or just after Christmas. St William of York RC church sold over 250 shares.

Citizens UK welcomes removal of payday lender’s inappropriate marketing slogan

Community leaders from Citizens UK welcomed the removal of payday lender Speedy Cash’s advertising slogan ‘you are not aloan, we are here if you need us’ from stores this weekend.

The move comes weeks after leaders from Citizens UK, working with lawyer Jacob Turner, filed a complaint to Camden Council about the slogan on the grounds that it could mislead vulnerable people into thinking that Speedy Cash was a form of support service rather than a payday lender.

Peckham Citizens Take Back Their Local Park

On Friday 11th September, over 120 children, parents, teachers and other local people from across Peckham worked together to clean up and to take back their local neighbourhood park, known as Kelly Avenue Park.

At the event, Councillor Barrie Hargrove, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Parks and Leisure committed to work with Peckham Citizens to make the park clean and safe and to meet the organisation again in the coming weeks to put a plan in place.

Retail Giants Join the Council in Backing Croydon Citizens Scheme to Help Young people Find Work

A JOBS brokerage which the council hopes to set up to help young people benefit from regeneration has been backed by Westfield and Hammerson.

The retail giants behind the £1.5 billion redevelopment of The Whitgift Centre have thrown their support behind First Step Croydon, a campaign to ensure young people have access to high-quality work experience and leave education ready for their first job.

Lambeth Community Comes Together to Promote Credit Union

On Monday 6th July 40 community leaders came together for a mass hand-in of membership forms to the London Mutual Credit Union branch on Acre Lane in Brixton. Working with Lambeth Citizens, local branch of community organising charity Citizens UK, and the Church Credit Champions Network (CTC), leaders from local faith and community groups handed in over 150 membership forms to the credit union.

Pupil Power bolsters mental health services for Greenwich teenagers

The country’s first Young People’s Mental Health Charter shaped by school pupils was launched on Tuesday 30th June, by students at Corelli College Co-operative Academy in Blackheath.

The Young People's Mental Health Charter, which aims to improve mental health outcomes for young people in Greenwich, is a joint initiative between Greenwich students, local GPs and the community organising alliance Citizens UK, with support from Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Public Health England.

Croydon Partnership commits to Living Wage​

In a meeting with local community organising alliance Croydon Citizens, regional branch of national community organising charity, Citizens UK, the Croydon Partnership committed to paying the London Living Wage and becoming an accredited Living Wage employer. The partnership consists of Westfield and Hammerson and is responsible for the planned £1bn shopping centre in Croydon.

Students tell Croydon retailers to ‘Stop Scrooging’ and pay the Living Wage

Croydon students told big retailers in Croydon this week to ‘Stop Scrooging’ and pay the Living Wage this Christmas. The students, from Coulsdon College who are working with Croydon Citizens, a local alliance of schools, colleges, and faith and community groups, swapped pricing labels in four of the largest retailers on North End (Debenhams, M&S, Sports Direct and Primark) with labels calling on the stores to pay the Living Wage.

Santa takes action against Speedy Cash

Fifty community leaders from Lambeth Citizens took action against payday loan company Speedy Cash’s aggressive marketing policies. They joined Santa in delivering coal to Speedy Cash, who have been naughty this year, and giving presents to London Mutual Credit Union, who have been nice.
