800 citizens from North London to follow Gandhi’s footsteps

800 citizens from North London to follow Gandhi’s footsteps

On March 30th 2011 diverse communities from across North London will come together to celebrate the founding of a new people’s alliance: North London Citizens. At the famous venue of Friends House, where leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi have spoken, we will revive and reignite North London’s long history of democracy in action.

North London Citizens is a powerful alliance of schools and universities, churches, mosques and synagogues that has been built to take action together for the common good of our local area and beyond. As part of London Citizens and Citizens UK, North London Citizens will build on a successful work such as the Living Wage Campaign, which has won over £70m of Living Wages for low-paid families, the CitySafe Campaign, which has helped stem youth violence and make our streets safer, and the Strangers into Citizens Campaign, which calls for a pathway to citizenship for long-term undocumented migrants.

At this historic North London Citizens Founding Assembly we will formally announce our membership and will commit to hold a Listening Campaign in and around our communities. Amidst joyful celebration, powerful histories and pledges of hard work, the foundations will be laid for decades of positive action for the common good.

After the Assembly, from April to October, trained teams in each member community will carry out a Listening Campaign. Through thousands of conversations we will uncover common concerns, hopes and fears. We will find powerful stories and discover new talent and leadership in our communities. Then in November 2011, we will launch North London Citizens with its own agenda – authentic, specific and ambitious.
